Three Categories of Music Video

Performance-Based Videos

A performance-based music video commonly includes the artist/s dancing and/or singing to the lyrics. These are very common in the pop and rock genres. Sometimes there will be backup dancers along with the artist. Furthermore, performance videos aim to really bring forward the artist's persona and style.

An example of a performance-based music video is TLC -No scrubs. This music video includes the typical elements of dancing and lip-synching. There are lots of close-ups and each member of the group gets their individual shots as well. Their group name is often seen in the background and their bold outfit choices really fit all the members and establishes their styles.

Narrative-Based Videos

A narrative-based music video is often highly related to the lyrics and follows a storyline. Often, the artist isn't included - there are actors playing the different parts. These types of videos are really engaging for an audience as they are waiting to see what happens next.

A famous narrative music video is Eminem ft. Dido - Stan. This video relates exactly to the lyrics. The fan is the one telling the story and the lyrics are what he is saying, writing or thinking. This is one of my favourite music videos - both the lyrics and video are really impactful and well done. I especially like how the greenish/dark filter makes everything so much more powerful.

Concept-Based Videos

A concept-based music video often has no relation to the lyrics - it is focused on a specific concept/ idea. They can be based on a theme or they can be symbolic. With these types of music videos, an audience can have different interpretations of the meaning.

An example of a concept music video is Daft Punk - Around The World. It is a very strange music video with lots of dancing, peculiar costumes and is all in one set. It is really interesting to see all the 'characters' (skeletons, swimmers etc.) all together and it actually working so harmoniously.
